About SC2

From the starcraft2.com -

StarCraft II continues the epic saga of the Protoss, Terran, and Zerg. These three distinct and powerful races will clash once again in the fast-paced real-time strategy sequel to the legendary original, StarCraft. Legions of veteran, upgraded, and brand-new unit types will do battle across the galaxy, as each faction struggles for survival.

Featuring a unique single-player campaign that picks up where StarCraft: Brood War left off, StarCraft II will present a cast of new heroes and familiar faces in an edgy sci-fi story filled with adventure and intrigue. In addition, Blizzard will again offer unparalleled online play through Battle.net, the company’s world-renowned gaming service, with several enhancements and new features to make StarCraft II the ultimate competitive real-time strategy game.

Well that is what Blizzard wants you to know. Here is what they don’t tell you — Starcraft 2 is the sequel to Starcraft and Starcraft: Brood Wars, Korea’s national past time (seriously). The game, still huge years after it’s March 13, 1998 release date, is the pinnacle of real time strategy (RTS) gameplay. I still remember thinking I was winning games with a Reaver drop… until I dropped those rhinoceros looking mother fuckers on a stack of Lurkers. Imagine a fat chick having her way with an all you can eat buffet. It was not pretty.

The development of StarCraft II was announced on May 19, 2007, at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in Seoul, South Korea (to further clarify, Koreans are to Starcraft like Brazilians are to Soccer). StarCraft II is being developed, under the codename Medusa, for concurrent release on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OS X. Blizzard has not yet announced a release date. It is interesting to note that development began in 2003, just months after the release of Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne (War3).

So the game is 6 years old already? Is it any good?

No – it’s great. Starcraft 2 beats other RTS games like it owes them money. Lot’s of money. Battle.net is getting a huge revamp for the new sport. Yes, sport. There will be an updated ladder ranking system and a player match up program that will give The Millionaire Matchmaker a run for her money. The focus on multiplayer comes from demand. Single player is cool, but only lasts so long. Creating an online addiction by stomping your friends is great for a software company. The agony of defeat makes a lot of tweens say, “Hey man.. this game is great. Get your mom to buy it for you.” GameStop makes money, Blizzard makes money, and I get a few more wins after those neophytes start the game up on their overpriced, underperforming, out-of-the-box PC’s.

Starcraft 2 beta? You have not told me the release date of Starcraft 2 yet!

Blizzard makes great software and terrible promises. Their answer, “The game will come out when it’s ready.” Personally I love that mentality. Nothing frustrates me more than a Vista 32 connection issue discovered two days after a game comes out (thank you Dawn of War II).
